The Fluffiest Residents: The Valais Blacknose Sheep
You cannot talk about Valais without mentioning its most famous and adorable animal: the Valais Blacknose Sheep (known in German as the Walliser Schwarznasenschaf). Thanks to social media, they are now celebrated worldwide as “the cutest sheep on Earth”.
But these animals are much more than just a pretty face; they are a perfect example of evolutionary adaptation and alpine history:
A Storybook Appearance: These unique sheep look like living teddy bears. They have a thick, snowy-white coat of curly wool that contrasts dramatically with their jet-black faces, ears, knees, and feet. To make them even more special, both males (rams) and females (ewes) grow beautiful, spiral-shaped horns.- Built for the Extreme Alps: This breed is very ancient, with historical records dating back to the 15th century. They were specifically bred to survive the harsh mountain environment. Thanks to their strong legs and solid hooves, they can easily climb and graze on steep, rocky slopes where other animals would fall.
Surprisingly Friendly Personalities: Most mountain sheep are scared of humans, but the Valais Blacknose is famous for being incredibly docile, calm, and affectionate. Because they spent centuries living closely with alpine farming families, they often behave more like gentle pets than livestock, happily approaching visitors for scratches.- A Living Tradition: Every summer, shepherds take the sheep high up into the Alps to graze. In autumn, when the sheep return to the villages, the locals host the annual Blacknose Shepherds Festival near Zermatt. At this festival, judges evaluate the sheep to find the perfect breed standards—including having a perfectly black nose.
