The Alpine Descent

Known as Alpabzug in German or Désalpe in French is one of the most captivating and picturesque traditions in Swizerland that has been taking place for hundreds of years. This vibrant celebration marks the return of cows and livestock from the high Alpine pastures during the summer to their winter homes in the valleys.

This festival takes place in late September or early October in the differents alpine regions of the country. We can see the procession coming down the mountain with the cows adorned with bells, flowers and even clothes, and with farmer families accompanying them.

In the towns this day we can see street markets, music playing by an alpine chour, tasting of typical Swiss gastronomy such as traditional Swiss cheese, sausages and local wines.

Oh! And don’t forget “the queen cow award” 😛
